In April 2008, the inaugural Millennium Campus Conference (MCC) at MIT brought over 1,000 students together with leading advocates, including Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Dr. Paul Farmer, musician and activist John Legend. Over three days, students were educated, trained, and inspired to step up their commitments in the movement to reduce extreme poverty and achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
This September 17-19, Millennium Campus Conference 2010 will be held at Columbia University. With the support of the United Nations Foundation, Better World Campaign, Jenzabar Foundation, and other sponsors, this national event will build upon the success of MCC 2008. Held on the eve of the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit and Clinton Global Initiative, this event will serve as a call to action for young Americans and youth worldwide who are committed to sustainable international development.
Early registration for MCC 2010 is now open. A limited supply of early registration tickets will be available for $10. There is also an incredible limited time offer of a two-night hostel stay in the city for an additional $30.

We look forward to welcoming you this September!
This spring the MCN launched www.commitinseptember.com (visit and sign it today!), a national advocacy campaign to President Obama and Congress demonstrating young Americans' commitment to global education, health, and long-term development in Haiti. The campaign has gained nearly 7,000 signatures with the support of campus organizers, activists, fraternities, sororities, college sports teams, friends of staff, Student Body Presidents, national non-profits, and members of Haitian and Haitian American communities.
John Legend, an Advisor to the Millennium Campus Network and Founder of the Show Me Campaign, created a video for the campaign during his time in Tanzania this June. Students and high-profile advocates are teaming up to hold our government accountable for promises made to the world's poorest communities.
Make sure to sign the petition and share it with friends this month. We can demonstrate that young Americans are committed to partnering with the people of Haiti and the world's poorest communities.

This spring the MCN launched www.commitinseptember.com, a national advocacy campaign to President Obama and Congress demonstrating young Americans' commitment to global education, health, and long-term development in Haiti. The campaign has gained nearly 5,000 signatures with the support of campus organizers, activists, fraternities, sororities, college sports teams, friends of staff, Student Body Presidents, national non-profits, and members of Haitian and Haitian American communities.
John Legend, an Advisor to the Millennium Campus Network and Founder of the Show Me Campaign, created a video for the campaign during his time in Tanzania this June. Actor Rainn Wilson posted and tweeted about the campaign this month. And within the last week, Macy Gray, Olivia Wilde, and Rock City have all tweeted about the campaign as well. Students and high-profile advocates are teaming up to hold our government accountable for promises made to the world's poorest communities.
July 21st has been selected as the National Day of Action for the Commit in September campaign. On the 21st, look out for campus-wide emails, special Tweets and Facebook posts, ads. on Facebook and Google, and potentially a surprise or two. Make sure to sign the petition and share it with friends on the 21st. Our goal is to top 10,000 signatures and demonstrate that young Americans are committed to partnering with the people of Haiti and the world's poorest communities.

On Wednesday, June 2nd, Will Herberich and Sam Vaghar attended the 2010 JAM Summit in Orlando, Florida. During the Jenzabar Foundation's Student Leadership Awards Dinner, Will and Sam accepted the foundation's 2010 Social Entrepreneurs of the Year award, on behalf of all the hard work of members, staff, alumni, donors, advisors, interns, and supporters who have helped to grow the Millennium Campus Network (MCN).
Our entire team is deeply appreciative of the Jenzabar Foundation; the foundation has made a significant grant to support MCN infrastructure and programs, and has donated office space in Boston's Prudential Center for use by staff and interns.
Thanks to engaged partners like the Jenzabar Foundation, the MCN is able to grow to scale and provide fundamental support for students committed to global public service.
Celia Daly (American '11), Greg Lewin (George Washington '12) and Evan Burt (American '12), have been approved as the new leaders of the MCN's Washington DC district. Celia will serve as the District Director, Greg as the Director of Outreach, and Evan as the Director of Membership Relations. Congratulations to each of them!
Brad Accarino (DePaul '13) and Brian Sweis (Loyola '12), have been approved as the new leaders of MCN Chicago. Brad will serve as the District Director, and Brian as the District Director of Operations. Congratulations to both; we're confident they will be an outstanding leadership team.
Boston Stand With Haiti, an event sponsored by UNICEF at BU and ONE at BU (two MCN MOs) raised $50,000 for Partners in Health's relief efforts in Haiti. This is a tremendous effort, and is a fine example of what student organizing can accomplish. Congratulations to all who were involved in the planning of this event. Job well done; we're proud to have you in the MCN!
STAND UP Against Poverty, the culmination of a month's worth of advocacy efforts on the part of MCN MOs, was a major success. The advocacy campaign netted over 250 handwritten letters and 1,500 postcards urging Senator John F. Kerry, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to reform U.S. foreign assistance so that it focuses on poverty alleviation and uses the Millennium Development Goals as an infrastructure for U.S. aid.
The event, held October 17th at Walker Memorial on MIT's campus, featured spoken word poetry by Jamele Adams, West African drumming by Joh Camara and his troupe, video messages from Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Mark Recchi of the Boston Bruins, and the personal story of Kheli Dube, forward for the New England Revolution, who worked two jobs as a youth growing up in Zimbabwe in order to play soccer.
The event brought together 700+ students and raised over $5,000 dollars, all of which will go to fund the MCN's Student Action Grants, a program beginning this spring.
Thanks to all who came out and made the event such a success!
After months of work, the MCN received its first major seed grant. Many thanks to the United Nations Millennium Campaign for deciding to support our initiatives. This funding will cover costs for STAND UP 2009, an advocacy campaign and major event, as well as all programming and operations expenses for General Assembly meetings in four Districts, online initiatives, travel, and more.
Will Herberich, the MCN's Executive Director and President, has been awarded a fellowship from John Legend's Show Me Campaign. The fellowship will allow him to work on the MCN full-time for the remainder of the summer. Many thanks to the Show Me Campaign for their generous support of the Millennium Campus Network.

Jeffrey D. Sachs is the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is also Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. From 2002 to 2006, he was Director of the UN Millennium Project and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals. Sachs is also President and Co-Founder of Millennium Promise Alliance, a nonprofit organization aimed at ending extreme global poverty. Without a doubt, Professor Sachs will prove to be a powerful ally as the MCN moves closer to achieving its mission of a more unified and better-equipped student movement to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
